World Press Photo exhibition in Portimão
This week an exhibition featuring the most captivating photos taken by photo-journalists published over the past year was inaugurated at Portimão’s Museum, where it will run until 28 August. This year 5,691 photographs by 108,059 photographers from 125 countries were evaluated by the 54th World Press Photo exhibition. Awarded pictures were taken by 55 professionals of 23 different nationalities.
The winning picture was taken by South-African photographer Joni Bieber and shows the portrait of Bibi Aisha, an 18-year-old Afghan girl whose husband and father-in-law cut off her nose and ears.
Paul Ruseler, World Press Photo comissioner, described the shot as “A different image, disturbing but beautiful.”
He said that this year’s pictures “help create dialogue and appeal for international help, this art is just that – beautiful but tragic.”
Entrance to the World Press Photo exhibition is free; it can be visited on Tuesdays, from 7.30pm until 11pm, and Wednesdays and Sundays from 3pm until 11pm.
